Sailing across the Pacific S.F to Honolulu

I know this is not about Chess or Go hm, and hopefully not the USCG, so thought I just let you know my best friend Pat's two Grandson's Graham & Brian will be leaving to S.F and will departure on May 8 to Honolulu.

Their dad Bernie Boltz will be the Blog webmaster so it be pretty much a one way communication from Boltz Team on the Shun-Feng Sailboat.

The boys born and raised in Hawaii are experience as they swim like fish and love to surf, windsurf, Kite surf, kayak, motorboat,fish, dive, and sometimes experiment with things like kayak kite sailing and things related to the ocean. They will be sailing with a friend who is an experience captain so they should have minimum problems, bearing in in mind that weather is a big factor!

So we wish Calm Seas and Fair Winds to the Boltz Team!

Just to reminder to our players that we now play both games of Chess and Go at Windward Chess & Go Club. New meeting hours for Windward Chess Club - in Kailua

Reminder as of April 18, 2007 Windward Chess Club will be meeting from 4:00pm to 7:30pm in Kailua, Hawaii at the Kailua District Park meeting room. You can also join the Windward Chess Club Meetup group to stay in touch to changes in venue or times, etc. Beside chess we also play go, so we hope to see you soon at one of meetings, lessons, rated games, Quads and meeting new people and new friends! Is chess is not your game visit us at Oahu Go Club!

2007 Hawaii Girls' State Championship

Hawaii's first official Girl's Chess State Championship was held on April 7th at Aliamanu Intermediate in their Science classroom. Five players played in the three round event. TD Guy Ontai ran a smooth tournament just hours before he had to board a plane.

The new Hawaii Girls Champion for 2007 is Oyadamari, Ashbea with a perfect score of 3.0 points, tired for 2nd was Wai, Marissa & Fischer, Holly , and third place was also tied between Perry, Liliy & Cummings, Casey , The tournament was small, but it was the first so we expect next event to be much larger as the word get out. Ashbea will be representing Hawaii at the Susan Polgar Girls Tournament, and the winner there will win a 4 year scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas. So its well worth your time to learn the game of chess!

Latest Hawaii Chess & Go tournament results

Aloha, Lots of tournaments have come and gone since November 2006! Hawaii even has Go tournaments now see the report near bottom.

First the final results of the Hawaii Interscholastic Chess League which involved the following tournaments, Le Jardin Academy Open Tournament (Sept 2006), Veteran's Day Nov 2006, MLK tournament, Jan 2007 and President's Day Feb 2007, in all 23 games and 4 tournaments, and almost 200 players in the (Open sections only) and the winners are. The winners received some plagues and funds to enter one of the many Championship tournaments to be held in the coming months and rated by USCF.

Jan 15, MLK Open was won by Robert Lau with a 6.0 record and Joshu Lee won the Novice section with a 7.0 record on Jan 15.

Results on Feb 19 Presidents Day Interscholastic in the High school section there was a four way tie between John Iiumna, Chen William, Alex Farrall, and Kevin Erick all with 5.0 points. Interscholastic was won by 6th Stephen Mau, Elementary was won by Tristan Kaonohi, Likeke Aipa both with 6.0 points. The Primary section was won by Roy Yang a late comer to teh open section tournaments and won with a perfect score of 6.0 points. The last Novice section for this season was won by Carter Lam 7.0 points and we hope to see do well in the open section as well. Note: Robert Lau, Charles Sonido and a few others did not attend this tournament as they were in Las Vegas not gambling, but playing in a National Team event.

March 9 & 10 Hawaii State Section Championships:

High school section, Robert Lau with 5.5 points and once again the Hawaii State Champion,

Intermediate Champion Marissa Wai with a perfect 5.0 record,

Elementary Section Tristan Kaonohi and Likeke Aipa both with perfect 5.0 scores won their section.

In the Primary section the winner was Roy Yang and Ford Nakagawa a new comer's to Hawaii Scholastic Open Chess both had 5.0 records.

Guy Ontai is seriously thinking about making these lower school events a two day event to ensure they can play out the rounds and determine the winners without tiebreaks. Congrats to all the winners and to everyone for making this a outstanding success.

Mililani Chess Day tournament result so far in 2007, Randy Prothero continues to run this monthly event, we hope to see more and more scholastic players soon!

The following is not chess but it does involve many chess players who also play the board game of Go a game that is 4500 years old.

On March 16 & 17 Hawaii made some AGA Go history, we had our first ever AGA rated event as well as the first ever in Hawaii U.S Youth Go Championship Qualifier, sponsored by Oahu Go Club and Hongwanji Mission School. The two winner's here will be playing in the U.S. Youth Go Championship later in May 26 & 27 in Seattle along with the other winners of all 8 Qualifier's a total of 16 players. The winner were Kevin Kitamura 1.5dan - Hawaii Senior Youth Go Champion and Chase Kessler 10 kyu - Hawaii Junior Go Champion. All winner's were sponsored by Ing Foundation with transportation and hotel expense's paid.

We followed up this tournament with two more tournaments held back to back weekends, at Le Jardin Academy (a club event) March 24th was again won by Chase Kessler 10 kyu, and on March 31 at Kailua District Park that tournament was win by Aaron Lief 9 kyu. Palolo Holiday Quads - last chess tournament in 2006 in Hawaii

Aloha & Happy New Year!

The last 2006 chess tournament was held on December 30th, 2006 at Palolo District Park.

Tristan Kaonohi 5.0 points and Vinh Le 6.0 points were the winners of their respective Quads, we only had 10 players in two Quads, but that is expected during the holidays, all the players earn some type of award. Tournament was held Palolo District Park and felt (as a dry run that it ws successful), now we are talking about another tournament later spring in a much larger room.

So check Hawaii Chess Federation's web site to see the new 2007 Chess Tournament schedule at www.hawaiichess.org . Tournament was CXR rated only!

Thanksgiving TOPTOPUS is successfully held at Times Coffee Shop!

Chet Gionson continues his winning ways, winning the 4 man double round robin with perfect a 6.0 points in the adult section and Charles Sonido wins the scholastic section with a perfect 7.0 points in a field of 11 players. All the players won something either a cash award or silver bars or coins and some even free entries to the next scholastic tournament to be held on January 16. 2007 on MLK Day. See www.hawaiichess.org for further details of this upcoming tournament.

Due to the the holiday weekend we had a smaller group, but expect the word will get out that "Times Coffee Shop" has a very nice venue for playing chess in Kaneohe and expect our next TOPTOPUS to be larger and will make sure I announce it sooner!

We not only had chess boards out in force were had a couple of nice Go sets that some players and even parents attempted to master the game of Go as well! There were some side games of 5 in row and capture Go. I also noted that Hikaru No Go was of interest to some of the young players!

We hope to see more players visiting the Windward Chess Club and Oahu Go Club! Check the meetup schedule for our respective club meetings times!
