Kahuku Chess Tournaments survives flood warnings and has a its 1st Annual "Open" Scholastic Chess tournament on its own school grounds. The event was free and the school provided food and drinks as well as really nice awards. Thirty triple weighted chess sets and boards were given away as well as medals and a perpetual wooden trophy. We also had great doors prizes that were a hit!
Who said April 1st is "unlucky day" and yes it was a Saturday chess tournament, some outdoor events were canceled due to water soaking the fields, and chess being an indoor event had no such problem, accept for the the two giant chess sets at Kahuku High School now having a moat of water around them now! Yes the same ones that GM Susan Polgar played chess on a few years ago!
We had a really great tournament at Kahuku High School on the North side of Hawaii (April 1st), it was a beautiful morning and we did get not get any rain and lighting but not until about 3:00pm, but it did not last long! Anyway we also ran a Bughouse tournament of 6 rounds besides the the 5 round G/15 rapids tournament and the players wanted more, Nate Blevins Kahuku Chess coach even said lets keep playing, but I was tired out and also realized the rain was back and so we finished the last round about 5:00pm.
Steven Yee 4.5 points was the top player again (won on tiebreakers), he also won the Iolani Tournament and held back Marissa Krienke 2nd place also with 4.5 points and Makaio Krienke 3rd with 4.0 points . The Team winner was new team at Kapolei Middle School from Leeward Oahu, the Kahuku Intermediate School chess team came in second and Hanahau'oli School came in third place!
Lots of players did not come or show due to possible flood warnig's and so we had a 38 players in the Rapids and and we did have a great Bughouse tournament with 38 players with adults allowed to play and so we had the top Hawaii Bughouse players from Honolulu and everyone had great time!
David McDonald a was not as lucky player on the chessboard but did well enough to win a chess set and was the lucky winner in the draw that was drawn by our youngest chess player Pre-K Jacob Prothero and so David won the top award of a digital chess clock! He was one happy little guy! He now has another story to add to his collection of stories he loves to tell people about, Marissa and Makaio I believe can attest to that, right!
I will try and get some photos especially the double giant chess sets that Kahuku had built a few years ago and due to the rains was surround by water and so they had path around it and so it looked cool with a moat of water surrounding it! I am still pretty tired stayed up to late the night before getting things ready, had to use my friends laptop and so had to download and load my programs and data files to prepare fro the tournament!
Anyway we now have 11 new CXR players, and believe that will put us at 1830 people unless someone else joined in the last few days! with approx 450 CXR players in Hawaii now!
Note: Its has rained now 42 days in roll here in Hawaii and has caused mudslides and boulders to to roll down hills and homes sink, fall and flood as well as Kahala Mall was flooded near Diamond Head area. But lucky for us I had my fingers crossed for April 1st we did have a good turn out even though some parents were concern about the flood warnings, the weather held out just long enough for us to have a good turn out and expect next year's Kahuku tournament to be even larger.
Nate Blevins the Kahuku Coach and the Kahuku School provided food and drinks and purchased the chess sets we gave away and Windward Chess Club donated medals and perpetual awards the was won by Kapeoli Chess Team. I had lots of help from Nate Blevins, John Imperial, Lynn Imperial, Randy Prothero and Adam Victoria-Santarone and lots of Kahuku Chess members and other players and parents that came out!
I was told I needed to work on my award presentations, which is true, I was rare tired and had a little problem pronouncing some names. I learn some more things about WinTD and bughouse setup and will do lots better next time.
Many of the players were asking me when if we planed a scholastic event this summer and another bughouse event, we had forty players playing in the bughouse event and they just wanted to keep playing. Iolani and Kahuku Bughouse events have indicated that this type of tournament is popular so I will lot into running another event this summer!
Anyway that all from for now from Kaneohe, Hawaii and yes its raining hard and lighting everywhere. I better turn off my computer, before it gets zapped!
We plan on having this tournament again next year, so make plans to travel to Kahuku High School next year, for results from this tournament go to Kahuku tournament results.

Hawaii Interscholastic Chess League Awards & Hawaii Chess News

Wow had a very good turn out at the Windward Community College; we were missing a few key teams and players! But there is always next year and other tournaments, right! Please give Guy Ontai & Randy Prothero a huge Mahalo! We even had great weather for the tournament and then the rain came back the next day!
Robert Lau won the High School section winning the right to represent Hawaii at the Denker Tournament of Champions!! He currently has a undefeated 32 CXR games streak, with only three more to equal GM Alek Wojtkiewicz There lot of winners to many to name here But since we sponsored HICL I'll Iist them here and you also check how you and others stood in the HICL standing. Info: Cost for 200 CXR players is $5 per player = $1000 annually, and does not include the HICL awards program costs! None of this is funded by HCF or taken from tournament entries, accept for the LJA Tournament we hold annually. which has been kicking off the Hawaii chess tournament season the last two years and will continue doing so! This year HCF / HICL open section scholastic tournaments had 162 players (5tournaments) and last year we had 178 players (5 tournaments).
Its normally overlooked during the tournament annoucements, but it does not stop us from getting the Hawaii's scholastic tournaments rated by CXR, Susan Polgar now has her New York Chess Center and her Susan Polgar Texas Chess Center involved. CXR- Chess Express, Inc. now has affiliates in Canada, Mexico, S. Africa and others are joining!
Note: HICL has no rating cost. its maintained on my own computer and so is only a seasonal rating and posted at http://www.windwardchess.org/, but at the end of each scholastic chess tournaments season HICL is giving out awards to the top rating performers and it does help to play in as many tournaments as possible. This year we had only 8 players play in all five recent scholastic (Sept 2005 to Feb 2005) tournaments out of 162 players. Chess season is year long so its understandable that other sports and events will keep players away at times!

HICL awards will be presented to winners on March 11, so be sure to come play in the Hawaii State Championships for High School to held from March 10 to March 11. And for K -8 only on March 11. Due to Feb 20 tournament having only five rounds we lowered the requirement of 18 games down to 17 games to qualify and to be fair to those counting on this tournament to achieve the minimum requirement of games!

Chess Tournaments in Hawaii
Aloha Hawaii Chess players,
1. I inquired with HCF President Randy Prothero about Hawaii's first 2006 USCF rated Mililani chess tournament that was to be held on Saturday Feb 11 and was informed that only three chess players showed up to play. So they canceled the tournament, but they stayed the whole day giving beginner lessons, playing on the giant chess board and playing skittle games with the public at the Mililani Town Center! I did not not play myself so no finger pointing from me, but I am curious why the rest of Hawaii chess players were no shows.
I know it being flu season, the Pro Bowl the next day and the Olympics were being shown on the television I guess we had reasons for not playing. Could have been the cool weather, which to me was rather nice to have, knowing what really cold weather is like having stationed in Grand Forks, N.D. and seeing chill tempatures of -80! Brrr now that's freezing!! Glad I live in Hawaii now!
Anyway please give us some feedback as to what will bring you to the next USCF tournament. Would an all scholastic event be of interest? G/45 may seen long, but if you ever played in the mainland or a state / national tournament game times per player are higher G/90 to G/120+ and these tournaments last for two or three days. Think about the longer you think about finading the right move the better chance of winning! Entry fees are higher too!
Anyway let us know what your looking for so we have better attendance as well as better tournaments. Mililani Town Center is really wanting chess players to play there really have a nice area for us, it is covered but outside. If you prefer another location let us known where and we'll check it out! Also if your interested in becoming a Tournament Director please let us know! Or if your interesting in helping a school chess club form and and give lessons we have a few openings both leeward and windward schools! Feb 20 President's Day is the next Scholastic tournament its as team tournament, but you DO NOT have to have a team to play, Guy Ontai will place you in a Ronin team, and there is a Novice section which I suspect will be a large group as well are getting more new players interested from public schools. Please visit the Hawaii Chess Federation web site at www.hawaiichess.org for more information on upcoming tournament, there are a few at "various game time settings" including bughouse tournaments!
Note: Please look at the blog entry below concerning the Feb 20 tournament and HICL standing, remember you must HAVE PLAYED in 18 games out of (30 games = 5 tournaments ) to qualify for the end of year awards to be giving out in March! Remember the winners will be sponsored to the to the USCF Hawaii Championships held in Sept as well as receiving some nice awards and free membership into CXR next year and sponsored to a free entry to the Le Jardin Academy tournament Sept 30 if your still in school K -12.
The HCF calendar also displays all the USCF tournaments scheduled as well as some new scholastic tournaments to be held at Iolani on March 4, and April 1 at Kahuku G/15 tournaments and bughouse tournaments! There could a another one in May if interest is high location to be annouced!

Remember the winners will be sponsored to the to the USCF Hawaii Championships held in Sept as well as receiving some nice awards and free membership into CXR next year and sponsored to a free entry to the Le Jardin Academy tournament Sept 30 if your still in school K -12.
The HCF calendar also displays all the USCF tournaments scheduled as well as some new scholastic tournaments to be held at Iolani on March 4, and April 1 at Kahuku G/15 tournaments and bughouse tournaments! There could a another one in May if interest is high location to be annouced!

Robert Lau wins MLK Day Scholastic Tournament with 5.5 score!
Aloha Hawaii chess players and friends,
Good news! Windward Chess Club WILL be meeting tonight Jan 18 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at Windward Mall - Center stage area, for the first time this new year. We will have lessons end game study. I kept seeing lots of games drawn or lost due to not knowing how to win with material advantage at the MLK Scholastic tournament. And there will Quads for those interested in rated CXR games to keep the tournament skill edge up.
Robert Lau out scored the rest of the "Open section" group with a 5 1/2 score to win the overall 1st award, also staying on top of the National standings HICL CXR standings as well as retaking the lead in the local seasonal standing in the HICL - Hawaii Interscholastic Chess League with a 1545 rating and a 11-0-1 after only two tournaments! John Iinumna continue on his quest to regain the HICL lead with a rating of 1520 and a 15-2-1 record in three tournaments, Christopher Wong at 1473 and a 13-3-2 record after three tournaments is in third place. With only one more tournament to be rated by HICL it down to the wire at the Presidents Day Team Scholastic tournament. Best of luck to all involved!

Aloha & Happy New Year,
First Monday, January 16th HCF, has scheduled the MLK Day Scholastic Tournament the first tournament this year at Aliamanu Intermediate School, TD Guy Onati & Randy Prothero. See www.hawaiichess.org for details and entry form. HICL top performer's battles are ongoing as we complete each scholastic tournament, only a few players have reached the required 18 games needed to qualify, so after this tournament the HICL picture will be clearer. This may be the last of full Open play tournament "open k-12th" this school year!
Since the next tournament on Feb 20 is a team's tournaments all players can still play, just will be placed in team with other school players if you do not have four players from one school. Schools are allowed more than one team.
The last scholastic tournament currently scheduled for this school year in the HCF web site www.hawaiichess.org is the March 10 - 11 Hawaii Divisions Championships, in High school division K -12th invited, Intermediate school divsvison K -8th and Elementary school division K - 6th you can only enter in one division. This last tournament may not be rated by HICL if we have no open tournament at Kahuku in April. If we do then we will count the March tournament as well and make presentations at Kakuhu for the HICL top rating performance players awards 2005 -2006 season for Overall, High, Intermediate, and elementary.
Either way all scholastic tournaments will be rated by (CXR) Chess Express, Inc, based in New York. see www.chess-express.com. This is a National rating system and includes your USCF tournaments in Hawaii and mainland if I'm made of the mainland tournaments prior to playing in them I will rate for you via CXR!
Second, after seven weeks at Times Coffee Shop due to holidays, WM management has invited Windward Chess Club back, starting today January 11th, but I failed to submit the the contract paperwork in a timely fashion so NO MEETING tonight at the mall. Its totally my fault and we hope to get approval from GGP in, Chicago, IL the main office by next week, if not we meet there after approval is given and paperwork and contract has been signed and approved. We have have been meeting at Windward Mall since Oct 2001 and we look forward to many more years of meeting there. Its good for the community and Windward Mall.
Note sometime in April / May 2006, Windward Mall will been starting a $23 million upgrade and so due to construction in the mall during that time we will not be meeting there. We will be seeking another meeting place so any suggestions please email ASP! We expect to return to the Windward Mall after the construction period but that is pending approval by GGP as well!

December 2005 summary for Hawaii HICL chess players
Aloha Hawaii Chess players,
Lots has happen since November. Robert Lau 9th grader place 1st and is now the national 9th grade champion, held in Houston, Texas! More details at http://hawaiichess.homestead.com/index.html.
On Dec 10 the Winter Scholastic tournament was held and John Iiumna won the open section with 5.5 points and in the Novice section with a perfect score of 9.0 points Halapiapi Manufekai was the winner. We expect to see him do well in the open section as well!
Anyway we look forward to the upcoming scholastic tournaments and have the current standing for HICL - Hawaii Interscholastic Chess League which basically is the the last three scholastic tournaments and the new current leader is John Iiumna with a rating of 1490 for the season and a 10-1-1 record after the two tournaments he played in and right behind is Robert Lau at 1480 with a 6-0-0 record after one tournament. Robert intended on playing in the Dec 10 event but was not feeling well after the return trip form the Nationals in Houston, Texas so he skipped the event. As a matter of fact a portion of the HICL players were SAT testing and or at family holiday events so the turnout was lower, but NOT as low as the Sept 24 tournament at the beginning of the year! And in third place is Christopher Wong at 1452 and a 9-2-1 record after two tournaments. The next three or four tournaments will determine the winners of the HICL. But lots of things can still happen, so we hope to see you soon and see if you can top these players!!
