Hawaii Winter Scholastic Tournament - results

Dec 15 Hawaii Winter Scholastic Tournament was about to start and had about 112 players in both Open and Novice sections and TD Guy Ontai & Randy Prothero had everything under control to start the 6 round tournament.

But just a few minutes before the the player / coaches meeting, Guy was informed that there was another group scheduled to use the venue later in the evening, but the problem was they needed the venue sooner! So the compromise was a 5 round tournament and no scheduled lunch. With everyone's help the event ended in record time and all awards were handed quickly.

When dust settled the only undefeated co-winners in the Open section were John Iinuma and Marissa Wai both with 5 - 0- 0 records John winning on tie-breakers this time, at Le Jardin Academy he came in 2nd due to tie-breakers. 3rd place went Stephen Mau on tie-breakers with 10 other player with 4 points each. In the Novice section Joshua Hsi with 6.5 points out 7 won 1st, 2nd went to Duke Mailolo with 5.5 points, 3rd to Alex Rambaud with 5 points.

Top three teams were 1st place Pearl City High School with 18 points, Hanala 2nd place with 13 points and 3rd place Mililani Middle School with 12.5 points.

One other item that needs to be mention is that the next three tournaments will have a fourse awards sections in the Open section, K -3rd, K-6th, K-8th, and K-12th, so more awards and and we expecte lots more players hence the new the venue!

Believe everyone had fun and even had a little Go game action on side between rounds, as Hawaii will once again be having one of the eight U.S Youth Go Championship Qualifiers, held around the country. Will announce confirmation and additional details later!

The start of the 2008 Scholastic schedule is below, please note the next two tournaments are at a new location "Washington Middle School" and we hope to see you there!

The Hawaiian Open: A Tournament in the Spirit of Aloha

For the second year in a row I was able to play in the Hawaiian Open chess tournament, held over the Labor Day weekend in the tourist district of Waikiki, in Honolulu, Hawai`i.

If you've read my editorial blog The Bungerting Baloner or my checker webzine The Checker Maven for any length of time, you'll know that Honolulu is our second residence and we spend some amount of time there throughout the year. For the last two years, I've been able to arrange things so that we were there for the tournament.

Windward Chess & Go Club in Action

After spenting all day along with 150 plus players at the Veteran's Day Scholastic tournament and just as many parents and coaches, I arrived late to our Monday Night Chess & Go club meeting, I had to stop and pickup dinner for someone I am a caregiver too! The group had one chess board setup and I had the rest, inlcuding the Go boards. As you see we have lots of reference material to review and purchase if we like and we hope to see you soon. But within a few minutes we had chess and go sets setup and ready to play, there was eight of us, thanks Joey for taking photo's!

We no longer have the 10 tables in Center Court at Windward Mall, but Borders Book & Music Store has been very supportive via close friends of chess & go members of the community, we have been welcome there to play chess & go. We meet on Mondays and yes most holidays if the Borders is open, we'll be there, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Also Starbucks Coffee which is in Borders also will alowed to meet there as needed, so we'll see you soon! Lets play Chess or Go or both if you can!

Charles Sonido won 1st place in the Open section with a perfect 6-0-0 score, congrats Charles and Pearl City High School Team again winning the team Overall honors with a score of 20 points out of 24. In the Novice section winning 7 out 8 games and promoted to the Open section forever was Shota Nemoto, congrats! There were a few players missing, but also seeing lots more new faces, thanks John Imperial & Lynn and the many folks supporting and working behind the players to get them to these events! Windward Chess & Go Quads at Borders, Windward Mall

Oct 29 and Nov 5 Scheduled to have Quads for both Chess and Go players. For chess they will be G/15 for Go G/30.

Its possible the Go tournament will not be completed the first Mondays so will continue it the following Monday. Both tournaments will be rated chess by CXR http://www.cxrchess.org/ and Go by AGA http://www.usgo.org/ .

I recently noted new interest in simi-blindfold type chess games that at Professor Chess is called "Skittles". Here is a little inform on Skittles A simple, popular exercise for improving visualization skills, and for learning to pay close attention to the relationships between the pieces on the board.

Students play modified blindfolded chess by moving cards that have the chessmen printed on the UNDERSIDE. Diagrams are included for begining play from endgame positions. Pages need to be cut prior to use. Use of colored paper is recommended. 5 pages. Approximately 140K.
