Hawaii State Championship Sept 2 - 4, 2006

Aloha Hawaii Chess players & friends,

Its that time of year again, who will be crowned the top Hawaii chess player the Hawaii State Championship is scheduled for Sept 2 - Sept 4, 2006, five rounds, at G/120 minutes see www.hawaiichess.org for tournament details as well as others scheduled over the next year. Its a Open tournament for all players, there will be no Novice section tournament this year, but a few additional prize awards have been added to encourage players to play in this event, from over 50 to under 10. This a USCF www.uschess.org rated event and CXR www.cxrchess.com will also be rating this event.

There will be no Speed tournament this year, but will probably be rescheduled for later in the year!

Hawaii CXR top players are as follows above 1200 rating who are current members, the rest can be found at www.cxrchess.com

Cornelius Rubsamen repeats as Hawaii Rapids Champion for 2006

Once again Cornelius Rubsamen Q 2059, CXR 2248, is Hawaii's Rapids State Champion for 2006 with a prefect score 0f 7.0 points, Chet J Gionson Q 1882 CXR 2005 came in 2nd with 6.0 points and Robert M Lau Q 1812 CXR 2043, Sujeet D Mehta Q 1604, & Gavin Ontai Q 1218 came in tied for third with 5.0 points. Had 31 chessplayers, of which 17 were scholastic players. All were U.S. Chess Federation players and 20 were current CXR members. CXR = Chess Express Ratings www.cxrchess.com. Note: July 16 the new CXR web site will be active, its currently undergoing final beta testing!

The Hawaii Rapids State Championship was held outdoors in the Mililani Town Center under the Gazebo TD was Guy Ontai, the weather was warm and so there were lots of fireworks on the Fourth of July "over the Chessboards". The giant chessboard was out and there was lots of action on it!

No chess notated games have been emailed to me yet, but will place them here as well any photos that become available!

There still lots of chess action left this summer before the Hawaii State Championships (details forecoming). See calendar below. Its may include a scholastic section this year USCF rated and CXR rated of course! This will count as the first HICL- Hawaii Interscholastic Chess League event followed by the Sept 30 3rd Annual Le Jardin Academy tournament.

Also please visit one of local chess clubs, Mondays -Honolulu Chess Club at Manoa Valley District Park, Kailua Chess Group at Kailua District Park, Tuesday - Pearlridge Chess Club at Pearlridge Mall, Wednesday - Windward Chess Club - Kailua District Park, Thursday - Mililani Chess Club at Mililani Recreation Center #6. There also the Waikiki Tables by the beach and several Starbucks have informal chess groups meetings at various locations!

Monroi a new technology for recording chess games & tournaments!

Aloha,

Its been awhile since anyone placed any more information about Monroi. The World database is growing but for games to be added from a tournament a Personal Chess Manager (PCM) and a Professional Tournament Manager(PTM) & Monroi S/W are needed at the tournament in question. PCM's are not used by everyone and normally only few are currently used. It you look at the June 16 to 18 Las Vagas National Tournament, there is about 20 games at http://www.monroi.com per round so more than lightly there were 20 PCM's in use. The cost is probably a factor, but hopefully that will go down as Monroi becomes a more popular to be used in tournaments.

So to answer the question, what about the games that no PCM was used!? Well hopefully someone turned in the chess notataion sheet and then someone else will inputed into a computer and it will showup someday at Chessbase or other database. The World Database is only for those using the Monroi equipment both PCM and PTM and software. As any new system or equipment you got to start somewhere! And I'm sure more upgrades will be coming soon as Monroi becomes better known and then maybe another company may come up with a better system in the future or Monroi will keep improving their equipment.

For now the cheaper route is the good old pencil and paper, just be sure you have a pencil sharper handy and an eraser, and hope you do not get into time pressure and then not write the last few moves of a game.

Has anyone in Hawaii used a Monroi PCM, not yet but that is about to change, will it appear on World database? Not yet no PTM was purchase, plus who would want to see my games anyway at this time!

Cost is the main issue, but if you have a laptop or computer at home, or PDA, and cell phone these devices were all costly too! They are used to communicate and their prices have come down a little. Monroi has an idea to make chess games more interesting for everyone and to share these games not just in a database on the Internet but in realtime! I observe Hawaii's State Champion from 97, 98, 99 play Kong Liang Deng (2478) at the Las Vegas event even though I was in Hawaii. I believe ICC was offering this as well for the top 10 boards where do you think they were getting the chess notataion for these games in progress!

As a chess instructor for beginner's to intermediate this new tool will assist me greatly, Mahalo Monroi!

By the way pencil and paper work fine at a personal level and I will be teaching chess notation always to my students!

Windward Chess Club moves to Kailua District Park for 15 months!

Aloha Hawaii Chess Players,

Due to Windward Mall renovating the mall we were asked to move out of the mall! Unfortunally Kaneohe District Park also is being renovated and so they could not house us either, so Kailua District Park was kind enough to offer the space, trying my best to keep the meetings on Wednesday's since we have other Hawaii chess clubs that meet on other days of the week.

Windward Chess Club will be meeting at the Kailua District Park possibly for the next 15 months, we need you to come and support this club, so that the District Park sees there is indeed a large group of chess players that need a meeting place on the Windward side of the Island. Let others know we moved and check http://chess.meetup.com/9/events for location of Windward Chess Club (WCC) Wednesday meetings 5:30pm to 8:45pm as well as the summer chess classes at Palolo Tuesdays and Kailua on Mondays for begineer scholastic players.

The Kailua District Park meeting rooms are smaller, but if we show we can bring a larger group we may be able to get more space, so we need your support. No A/C just good ole Trade winds to keep us cool, bring your workout clothes, lots of other things to do at the Park, like start training for the Honolulu Marathon!!

WCC is the ONLY public chess club that offers CXR rated match games and Quads currently in Hawaii, For current Quad results go to http://www.windwardchess.org/Results.html. Please let us know where you like WCC to meet to ensure you can come to the club! We have limited known possible locations. Due to the durations (15 MONTHS) I thought the district park at Kailua would be best and to keep it on Wednesdays or Tuesday's if we need to change the date. Also the main Kaneohe District park is preparing to go under renovations as well so we could not go there and they already have other events going on there on Wednesdays! Tuesdays conflict with the Pearlridge Chess Club, Monday with Honolulu Chess Club, and Thursday with the Mililani Chess Club for those that go there is as well!

I already have chess class (group) at Kailua on Mondays from 3:30pm to 5:00pm, so I know Kailua area has an interest in chess and many players do visit the Windward Chess Club on Wednesdays as well. this would encourage these players to come, plus its close to the beach and the rest of us can visit the beach before or after the chess meeting!

We have only two more meetings at Windward Mall (June 7 & 14) and so our first meeting away from the mall will be June 21. Right now I'm lobbying for Kaila District Park on Wednesdays 5:30pm to 8:30pm! But please take our poll and lets see what the majority say, if select another location that not listed please email ASAP with your suggestion!

Tomorrow night (June 7th) we will decided at our regular meeting as we are running out of time to find a new location!

Windward Mall has express an interest inviting us back on Sept 2007 when the renovations are over and this novation effects other activities at the mall not just the chess club. Please let the Windwared Malll we appreciated the last 4 1/2 years of playing chess at the mall and we hope to continue when the revocations are completed!

2nd Annual Aikahi Invitational Scholastic Tournament

Aikahi Invitational Scholastic Chess Tournament was completed May 6! We had 27 players and appreciate those traveling long distance to come here! Check the web site results here

Hanahauo'li with the whole team having to leave early, won the team section with 17 points! They were followed closely by Le Jardin Academy with 16.5 points and Aikahi Elementary with 12 points.

Individual winners were, 1st place Andrew Brabazon, with 5.0 points winning on tiebreakers, 2nd place Steven Yee with 5.0 points, and Jefferson Huynh with 4.5 points for 3rd place.

We had a good turn out and we like to say Mahalo, to Aikahi Elementary School, its chess club, Kathy Bryant, Coach Mark Stitham, Ray Kama, and all the parents who help make this a fun day as well as for the pupu's and pizza.

We could not have managed without everyone's support; we just got to remember to bring our cameras. I think only Chase's dad had a camera!

This was CXR rated event, for current CXR members!

Kahuku "Got Chess" holds successful tournaments on April 1st!

Kahuku Chess Tournaments survives flood warnings and has a its 1st Annual "Open" Scholastic Chess tournament on its own school grounds. The event was free and the school provided food and drinks as well as really nice awards. Thirty triple weighted chess sets and boards were given away as well as medals and a perpetual wooden trophy. We also had great doors prizes that were a hit!

Who said April 1st is "unlucky day" and yes it was a Saturday chess tournament, some outdoor events were canceled due to water soaking the fields, and chess being an indoor event had no such problem, accept for the the two giant chess sets at Kahuku High School now having a moat of water around them now! Yes the same ones that GM Susan Polgar played chess on a few years ago!

We had a really great tournament at Kahuku High School on the North side of Hawaii (April 1st), it was a beautiful morning and we did get not get any rain and lighting but not until about 3:00pm, but it did not last long! Anyway we also ran a Bughouse tournament of 6 rounds besides the the 5 round G/15 rapids tournament and the players wanted more, Nate Blevins Kahuku Chess coach even said lets keep playing, but I was tired out and also realized the rain was back and so we finished the last round about 5:00pm.

Steven Yee 4.5 points was the top player again (won on tiebreakers), he also won the Iolani Tournament and held back Marissa Krienke 2nd place also with 4.5 points and Makaio Krienke 3rd with 4.0 points . The Team winner was new team at Kapolei Middle School from Leeward Oahu, the Kahuku Intermediate School chess team came in second and Hanahau'oli School came in third place!

Lots of players did not come or show due to possible flood warnig's and so we had a 38 players in the Rapids and and we did have a great Bughouse tournament with 38 players with adults allowed to play and so we had the top Hawaii Bughouse players from Honolulu and everyone had great time!

David McDonald a was not as lucky player on the chessboard but did well enough to win a chess set and was the lucky winner in the draw that was drawn by our youngest chess player Pre-K Jacob Prothero and so David won the top award of a digital chess clock! He was one happy little guy! He now has another story to add to his collection of stories he loves to tell people about, Marissa and Makaio I believe can attest to that, right!

I will try and get some photos especially the double giant chess sets that Kahuku had built a few years ago and due to the rains was surround by water and so they had path around it and so it looked cool with a moat of water surrounding it! I am still pretty tired stayed up to late the night before getting things ready, had to use my friends laptop and so had to download and load my programs and data files to prepare fro the tournament!

Anyway we now have 11 new CXR players, and believe that will put us at 1830 people unless someone else joined in the last few days! with approx 450 CXR players in Hawaii now!

Note: Its has rained now 42 days in roll here in Hawaii and has caused mudslides and boulders to to roll down hills and homes sink, fall and flood as well as Kahala Mall was flooded near Diamond Head area. But lucky for us I had my fingers crossed for April 1st we did have a good turn out even though some parents were concern about the flood warnings, the weather held out just long enough for us to have a good turn out and expect next year's Kahuku tournament to be even larger.

Nate Blevins the Kahuku Coach and the Kahuku School provided food and drinks and purchased the chess sets we gave away and Windward Chess Club donated medals and perpetual awards the was won by Kapeoli Chess Team. I had lots of help from Nate Blevins, John Imperial, Lynn Imperial, Randy Prothero and Adam Victoria-Santarone and lots of Kahuku Chess members and other players and parents that came out!

I was told I needed to work on my award presentations, which is true, I was rare tired and had a little problem pronouncing some names. I learn some more things about WinTD and bughouse setup and will do lots better next time.

Many of the players were asking me when if we planed a scholastic event this summer and another bughouse event, we had forty players playing in the bughouse event and they just wanted to keep playing. Iolani and Kahuku Bughouse events have indicated that this type of tournament is popular so I will lot into running another event this summer!

Anyway that all from for now from Kaneohe, Hawaii and yes its raining hard and lighting everywhere. I better turn off my computer, before it gets zapped!

We plan on having this tournament again next year, so make plans to travel to Kahuku High School next year, for results from this tournament go to Kahuku tournament results.
